Hi everyone! Just recently got back from another trip to Chicago to visit my boyfriend. We went to the Lincoln Park Zoo--free admission! I encourage anyone who gets a chance to go visit! For a free zoo, they have a lot of great animals and exhibits.

...to draw right now is hummingbirds. There is something about these little guys that is SO FUN to draw! It's an obsession that started with watching nesting hummingbirds and their chicks in my backyard.

These little guys were also drawn with my new favorite pen, haha. Uniball Signo DX 0.38mm black gel pen. LOVE IT.

Pastel brush!! Where have you been all my life?? Haha, I finally broke out of my shell and found the pastel brush in Photoshop. Been LOVING the effects! Testing out new ways of coloring in efforts to create pieces geared more towards the television industry.

Used photo reference for the cat. Feedback is always appreciated! :)

Introducing Lily and Tag! Two original characters created by my dear friend Mitsuko.

Had a lot of fun working on this piece--although trying to sort out color issues at the end between her computer and mine was kinda crazy. Still haven't quite figured out why the colors get so bleached out when she opens the file on her end. If anyone has an idea, please let me know!!

EDIT: The colors in the preview image are also really pale and ick! Click to full view--MOST of the saturation comes back...

It's odd trying to let it sink in that I'm not going back to school. It's been routine to reset at the end of break and gear up for the new term, but instead, I'm preoccupied with trying to make a living putting my newly acquired degree to the test.

Here's a sketch I did recently, just letting my mind wander...more "stream of consciousness," if you will.

Chicago Trip Pt. 2

Goodness, the new term's gone off to a crazy start, haha. Five classes in three consecutive days is a bit much for me, but I'm just gonna have to truck on through!

Sat in on some of my boyfriend's classes in Chicago. I wound up doing a lot of portrait studies, which was awesome practice.

In response to Nophantomsallowed: there's always a bit of grueling/boring classwork, but for the most part the projects are pretty fun. In the lower terms (1-3ish) you're still building on foundation skills, generally speaking. Once you get to the mid/upper terms (4-8), you get to have a hand in choosing what you want to do. Use those assignments as opportunities to really have fun and go all out!

Yes, I'm alive!! I'm finally back and starting a new semester at school. Summer term...ew. But can't be helped. Here are some sketches I did of people waiting at the LAX terminal back in April. I was on my way to Chicago!!

And in response to Nophantomsallowed's question: I wouldn't necessarily call Art Center "torture," but it IS very intensive and you have to be serious about your education and willing to work long hours. Some students recommend getting your GE's out of the way at a community college first. If you do, make sure you contact Art Center and confirm that the classes you're taking at the CC/JC will transfer to Art Center. Many classes don't. Hope that helps! Good luck!

Wow, so it had been almost two years since I'd touched oil paints, and I'd forgotten how awesome they could be. I didn't miss the toxicity though. I'm having a blast in the portrait painting class I'm taking, and I've discovered that I'm not half bad!! :D I'll post more of these when I get the chance.

So I've been teaching myself how to work in gouache. I'm using it in my landscape class because our teacher has been very lenient about letting us choose which media to work in. Awesome practice.

Fiddled around in the beginning just to get the hang of it.

Did these yesterday for homework at LA Arboretum.

Already I can tell I've come a ways since my first gouache landscape (which you don't want to see, believe me). It's encouraging to know I'm improving :)

...is an awesome place to go if you're in a landscape class like me. Admission is not as expensive as the Huntington Library's, and there's more garden and less art museum. Don't get me wrong, those art buildings at Huntington are awesome, but when the focus is plants, then you can't go wrong with a place that specializes in just that. :D

Photoshop Painting 101

After looking at a lot of paint demo videos and looking at dozens and dozens of amazing paintings online, I decided I really need to teach myself how to paint in Photoshop. I also need to nail painting traditionally, but when the only thing I have currently available is my laptop, I settled for the digital medium.

I did these sketches today (using reference for the last two) in an effort to the the hang of digipainting. Once I have my scanner, I can upload the pencil sketches I've been doing, but for now, it's only what's already on my lappy.

What do you think?
